On intersectionality and disability

Collage that represents where I have lived, and some of my intersectional identity: Monterrey, Mexico and Victoria, BC

In today’s class, the guest speakers invited us to reflect on how personal identity affects the way in which we move through the world. Intersectionality is a feminist term that considers the different identities that a single person holds and how that affects their lives, and tries to challenge dominant oppressive systems like ableism, racism, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia, for example.

Inclusion of disabled people is imperative in our classrooms, and there are some ways in which teachers can create an inclusive environment with technology. One of the ways students who have different ways of communicating, is which is Argumentative and Alternating Communication (AAC), which is something I learned about for the first time today. I have observed it be used in classrooms but I am not very familiar with how it works and I would like to learn more.
